Previous FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to lawmakers and hindering a congressional proceeding.

The former director's legal representative submitted the answer on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney declared he would attempt to have the proceedings thrown out for several causes including that his client, a critic of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

James Comey was formally accused just days after the former president urged his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative informed the court they intended to file several legal requests to dismiss the legal matter before a legal hearing, stating the government's case was spiteful and that a government lawyer was improperly appointed to take over the proceedings.

Mr Comey's proceedings was originally overseen by the original attorney, who left his position under influence from Donald Trump after his examination into a different opponent - the New York official - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the court on Wednesday, chatting with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was accompanied by his partner, his wife and offspring Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration dismissed.

Following the reading to the court read his rights and the two counts against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, the defendant was questioned if he comprehended the charges.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he informed the court.

Historical Information

James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about several months into the former president's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the moment, the director was leading an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the election effort.

During his tenure, the director caused a counter-response from liberal politicians when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was probing Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a personal email system. Indictments against the candidate were not filed, resulting in criticism from conservative politicians as well.

Present Charges

The federal government assert James Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They say he provided false information to the legislative body by stating he had not authorized an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to media organizations data about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also charge the defendant of "wrongfully trying to affect, obstruct and impede" the committee by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media James Comey posted to his social media after he was indicted, he stated he was not guilty and alleged the former president of behaving like a "tyrant".

"We have known for years that there are ramifications to opposing Mr Trump," he said. "We will not live on our kneeling."

"I'm innocent," he added. "Thus initiate a court case."

The charges against James Comey came after Donald Trump published on online platforms demanding his attorney general, the attorney general, take legal action against Mr Comey and others.
