Alarming Video Captures Instant Officers Suffer Blade Attacks in Unexpected Assault
One ranking policeman who jumped to the aid of a fellow officer that was assaulted by a knife attacker was granted the King's Commendation for Bravery.
Sergeant Tim Ansell fought with 27-year-old Jacob Brown following he pressed a blade to the throat of his partner Sgt Marc Foster.
Brown launched his attack as the policemen and their third officer, Police Constable Marcus Wolstencroft, were talking to a motorist following a vehicle incident in Whalley Range in July 2023.
Brown attacked with blade the two Sgt Ansell and Sgt Foster before Police Constable Wolstencroft stunned him with a electric weapon.
"Officer knifed," PC Wolstencroft could be heard saying over his radio.
Bodyworn and vehicle camera video released by the police department depicted Brown, that was clothed in dark clothing with a head covered, run up to Sgt Foster from behind with a weapon outstretched.
He collided with the officer who lost balance and went down to the street, after which Sgt Ansell intervened and struggled to restrain him to the ground although being multiple times hit with the blade.
Police Constable Wolstencroft drew his Taser and awaited a safe opportunity, ending the fight to an finish.
Sgt Ansell stated audibly: "Please provide something on my throat now, I've been stabbed in the neck."
Sgt Ansell received two lacerations to his neck and additional injuries to his limbs and body, whereas Sergeant Foster suffered cut injuries.

The new award follows subsequent to the trio of policemen received departmental Courage Honors in fall 2023 and the John Egerton Bravery Award from the area officer association in early 2024.
